Damnit! I hate stuff like that, because it is such a let down! I was afraid I had a bad output transformer too, but found I had a bad coupling cap. At least that's something I could get stateside.

I'd suggest carefully inspecting the connections from the tiny transformer wires to the connector lugs. I'll bet money that's where the trouble lies. If you can find the end of the wire, make sure it's soldered. It would be great if it happened to just be barely connected and came off; If you can get to it you can solder it back on.

About the volume pot, mine was real dirty too. I have some flux remover and I was tempted to clan it with some, but I was afraid of getting it on the finish and I didn't want to remove the pot to spray it. So I played the amp for a while, and turned the wiper full clockwise to full counter-clockwise several times. This is an old trick I always did with car stereos and stuff - Just move the wiper back and forth all the way several times to remove dust and debris. The idea is that it physically brushes it away, and it really works.

With the Stoetkit, I found that I couldn't remove debris by turning the knob back and forth. It persisted, no matter how much I turned the knob. But after about 10 hours of use, I found it was completely gone. So now I think there was a film that evaporated as the amp heat worked on it. The noise now is completely gone.
