Martin,
That is a good question.......why WOULD someone go to all that trouble when a simple OB or sealed enclosure would be so much easier to build? There MUST be a reason! And I doubt it's marketing on the part of the builders........my guess and it's only a guess.......
Efficiency, dynamics.....and to achieve a balanced response down to cut off with out sacrificing efficiency might be a couple reasons. Again.....just my whacked opinion to a good question.

I have been asked that same question many times, and I like to ask it of people....after all why go to so much trouble? Well, after hearing the alternatives, all of them.......in the case of SINGLE DRIVERS...the BLH wins every time (IN MY OPINION), they simply sound better than a sealed when using a SINGLE DRIVER with a low <.3 QTS (typical of FR drivers). Nothing technical about this........they just sound better (to me). Of course, you try to stick a high Q (single) driver in a BLH and then the situation changes a good bit.

I have always been of the opinion (that word again) that if it sounds good and measures bad...It's good. If it measures good and sounds bad....it's bad. I am quite certain that it is possible to build a speaker that measures very well and have it suck eggs in terms of "sound quality". And that my friend, I have no real explanation for. Although I do have an opinion or two. My buddy calls it the "it factor". We don't know what "it" is, but when you hear "it" you know it. Single driver speakers are a very tricky animal........I think it is MUCH easier to build a conventional 2 way and have it have the "it factor"......at least that has been my experience in this little journey! So back to the question......why go to all that trouble? There must be a reason the Lowther crowd does it ( and has for Decades!).....and a reason that Fostex builds drivers specifically for BLH. I saved the real reason for last..........the REAL reason......is so you can play "Metallica", of course!
