Now that the unit is finished here are some thoughts on the kit.
Sound quality is really good. The amp does a nice job of articulating the details in the music. You can hear the vocalist inhale a breath of air and the fingers sliding down the strings of a guitar. Crummy amps don't do this.
The tubes on my amp do not seem to run noticably hotter than the demo amp I had tried. I have paid pretty close attention, and it really seems to be comparable to what I expected.
Also, I have a slight hum on the right channel. With 96db speakers, I have to be within 2' to notice. Left channel is dead quite. I have not quantified the hum in terms of frequency and voltage, but I suspect it will be the 120Hz reported previously. Wayne has posted that the left channel on his unit has the hum and the right is dead quite.
I like the idea of high quality capacitor upgrades. May need to do that to this unit. The quality of components of the kit are quite high, but a few strategic cap replacements could have benefits.
I have yet to try tubes other than the RFTs that came with the unit. After I have lived with the RFTs for a bit I will probably source some Svetlana tubes and give those a shot.
