Would def look at The Audio Critic, which was edited by the colorful Peter Aczel, whom just recently died. Back issues available here: http://www.biline.ca/audio_critic/audio_critic_down.htm

Equipment is out of date, but his vision of what audio should be is pretty cut and dry: Tubes suck and solid state rules. I still like to read his "The Ten Biggest Lies in Audio" found here: http://www.ecoustics.com/articles/ten-biggest-lies-audio/

Vacuum Tube Valley was another good one. Issues found here: https://web.archive.org/web/20130604042043/http://www.jumpjet.info/Pioneering-Wireless/eMagazines/VTV/vtv.htm

Sound Practices was pretty awesome....lots of diy/mod tube and horn gear. Can be found at: https://www.hificollective.co.uk/magazines/sound_practice_archive_cd.html

You can poke around a find an issue here and there online for a taste, but it well worth the money...

I used to like Audio back in the day as well. Stereo Review was so-so and Stereophile was always fun to drool over.....
