The three Pi speaker with Definimax woofer has an EBS alignment, so it sounds gently rolled off down low. It isn't so pronounced that it sounds weak without subs, but it definitely sounds better with them. That's fine, it's all part of the design philosophy. I do not incorporate BSC into my speakers because they are intended to be used with flanking subs anyway.

In the response curve above, you'll notice the baffle influence on directivity starting around 200Hz. This is the upper range of helper woofers, and augmentation using flanking subs is my preferred method of dealing with that. You'll also see the EBS in the octave from 50Hz to 100Hz. Flanking subs will help provide extension in this range too.
There is usable response very deep from this speaker, so it provides a good deal of energy for blending with helper woofer / subs to provide modal smoothing. Or in cases where it is used without subs, it has enough low frequency output that the deepest notes are definitely heard. But again, while the speaker sounds pretty good without flanking subs, I think it definitely sounds better with them.
