I haven't installed them myself, but it's an intriguing idea, and in principle, a very good one. You actually could get away with small speakers, because the wall will amplify the bass.

If you have any construction experience or know anyone who does, it's not a big deal, provided you already know how to assemble a speaker. I like the idea that you don't even need to assemble a cabinet -- you just cut a hole in the drywall (which is easy enough to do by hand), fish some cable up the wall, and connect it up!

By itself, it won't be Hi-Fi, but with proper planning, it could be made to be so.
