Re: Alan Parsons speaks about the A/V world
I always listen to music in surround sound now. One of the things that annoys me about my Pioneer Elite TX-47 (old), is that the MCACC settings are always flat and have weak bass to me. There is a button labeled acoustic calibration that has settings f...

Re: Notes for the DIYer
As most of you know, I've been building CD/waveguide speakers like these for over 30 years. My first models all used a simple crossover, and we continued to build them that way through most of the 1980s. I always have tended to embrace Occam's Razor wh...

Re: Speaker placement and wavefront launch
The illustrations show radiation from a monopole source with boundary distances relative to wavelength. You're right that different frequencies create different patterns in the room, because the speaker is a fixed distance from the boundaries. But thes...

Speaker placement and wavefront launch
The ideal: The constant directivity cornerhorn. In this configuration, the sound source is within 1/4λ from the apex of the corner. This makes the walls act essentially as a large waveguide, confining radiation to the angle of the walls. There is no ...

Re: Random 3pi vs 4pi Question
A four π speaker modified to be sealed has no bass. The standard vented version goes lower, which is important for modal smoothing. If you're running three speakers, the center can probably be made sealed but I definitely wouldn't do all three that way...

Re: The Acoustic Center: How it applies to Loudspeaker Measurements
Absolutely. At midrange frequencies up, the reverberent field is usually almost as loud as the direct sound. So the loudspeaker's polar response is important, because sound radiating in all directions provides the energy for the reverberent field. You...

Re: The Acoustic Center: How it applies to Loudspeaker Measurements
Hi, Good stuff. You should try to measure a pair of ESLs. Under normal circumstances virtually impossible to get good readings. I finally gave up and believed what Martin Logan was saying all along. Room parameters are everything with dipoles.

The Acoustic Center: How it applies to Loudspeaker Measurements
I've seen a lot of misinformation spread around the internet, so I thought it might be helpful to post some links to useful information here. Hopefully this will dispel some myths. To obtain accurate SPL measurements, one usually needs to measure at ...

4 pi: impressions of a newbie
I just finished building my 4 pis about a week ago and I thought I should contribute by posting my impressions. Perhaps somebody on the fence about 4 pis would just go ahead with the builds or buy them assembled. These 4 pis have the JBL 2226 woofer and...
