Re: Suggestions for FAQ
There is a way to make threads sticky, yes. And sometimes I think about doing it. But really, there are probably a couple dozen that I refer to over and over again, and if I made them all sticky, the whole first page would be covered with them. Mayb...

Re: 4 PI by Andy
I'm not able to see some of your pictures. Looks like they're uploaded to a private area on the internet somewhere that you can see (probably because you're logged in) but the rest of us cannot see. I suggest uploading them as an attachment here, to ma...

Six Pi Review
Corners can be the undoing of a loudspeaker. Bass becomes exaggerated. Close proximity to the walls results in early reflections that make imaging vague and the highs grainy. Most manufacturers recommend placing loudspeakers well away from corners and the ...

Cabinet design, port placement and internal standing waves
There are three things that come into play with the cabinet geometry and the arrangement of the woofer and port(s). First is the Helmholtz frequency, which is something pretty much all DIYers think about. When you run a T/S simulation, this is primar...

Re: H290C Horn/Waveguide
Yes, the H290 horns in existing designs can be retrofitted with H290C waveguides. It was designed specifically to be a bolt-on upgrade. The old H290 was really pretty good, acting much the same as a waveguide providing nearly constant horizontal dire...

Re: H290C Horn/Waveguide
There is no suitable alternative to the H290, now designated H290C. The horn/waveguide properties are very specific, and it cannot be substituted without a complete redesign/test cycle. The biggest issue is the position of the acoustic center, which is...

Re: Where's the Voice Coil?
Measurements at a large distance make small shifts in acoustic center have less effect on SPL, but they don't change the effects on phase. If you have two sound sources that are a half-wavelength apart, you'll still have cancellation, no matter what dis...

Re: Where's the Voice Coil?
Measuring at greater distances to lessen the effect of the acoustic center seems to imply that by the time the wavefronts reach the listening position time delay of the drivers becomes moot? Couldn't hurt to try and line up the voice coils, tho'?

Re: Where's the Voice Coil?
The voice coil is centered just behind the front plate. That's the physical center, but the acoustic center depends on a lot of stuff. So if that's what you're really wanting to know, you gotta measure it. But you can estimate it as being just behind ...

Re: Let's talk about 4Pi Speaker Stands =p
I like using stands that are 12" to 15" tall, and have 3°-7° tilt. The reason is this puts the acoustic center at ear height, and maintains a nice forward lobe that is centered. A very important secondary reason is the angle helps to cradle t...
