Those unfinished speakers I showed playing outside got the veneer treatment this week. While I was at it I cut discs the size of the ports and sealed them. just to see if maybe Villchur was on to something.

They sound so good I even commented over on Bottlehead where SET friendly is a constant quest. And a mention of Pi Speakers couldn't hurt.

Wayne, What happened to the 3Professional Matts mentioned with JBL 12" 2206. Gone?

These are very Studio 2 Pi like, 1.35 cu ft inside with the Vifa DX-25 but an Altec/University 12" Speakerman "donated".

I think sealing brought the woofer level down more in line with the Vifa and all trace of the boomy bass is gone but fingers plucking double bass strings are very clear.

There is a little "boxy" coloration: more with the solid waste A/V receiver and much less with the revised Dignity Audio 300B's I just received.

And ladies and Gentlemen, Mesdames et Monsieurs, Damen und Herren....

My New (used) horn -

A late '60's Conn 50H I won on E-bay last night against some pretty wimpy (or smarter than me) bidders

Pretty cool, Bill! What are the specs on that Altec woofer, do you recall?

The Professonal Series three π is a neat little mini-monitor and it sounds very nice. But it didn't really fit with the rest of the line so I never made it available on the shopping cart. It's basically a JBL 2206 and Vifa DX25 in a cabinet the size of a two π, 22"x15"x10" with a 3" diameter port just under 2" long. First-order crossover like the one π and two π Speakers.

Kind of a 'hollow' sound.
I took apart the third order BW and left it crossed at 3000 with just the 13.25 cap first order. Then swapped out the 1 mH coil replaced it with .5 on the woofer. Textbook.
We'll see if that helps.

They measure exactly like the Altec 414 driver.

The 414 is a cast frame driver with larger magnet though.

Utah must have gotten together with Altec near the end to come up with a driver similiar to the 414, but at a much cheaper price.

They are more common than most people think!

Yeah, I like to use a first-order crossover on that tweeter. The DX25 has a wide surround and can handle the shallow crossover slope. I use a 10uF cap on the tweeter and a 0.5mH coil on the midwoofer in the one π and two π speakers.

Was that scheme planned for the BR, or the sealed? It seems (for some reason?) that usually sealed boxes are really 'stuffed' while BR's are 'lined'. If they sound "hollow" then a more robust stuff job might help.....

.5 mH coil is a winner.
Going to first order maybe makes a little more detail but i'm sure the banishment of the 'hollow 'boxiness' sound is having the right coil.
