Anyone have opinions on the Eminence Magnum 18LF's? PE is closing out some that were re-branded for $150ea. Aside from the phasor
plug, they look and spec identical. Part: 299-444
Magnum18LF 40Hz in a 4.16cu ft box (Boxplot)

I like Magnums. When Eminence dropped the Magnum 15HO and 18HO, I was very disappointed. Magnum 18LF's are a great buy at $150 so I'd snag 'em if I were you.

Are the new DEFINIMAX supposed to be a replacement for the Magnums? Do you know if Eminence has plans to roll out HO versions in 15" and 18"? The Definimax 12HO still looks very good on paper.

Eminence does not plan to release a speaker compatible to the Magnum 15HO or the Magnum 18HO, so those are off the table. I thought that was very odd, since the HO specs were essentially compatible with Omegas, JBL 22xx drivers, and several other devices. As for the 12HO, I find it to be a good midrange, but it doesn't have the right specs to go low. That makes it an awkward driver for me to use, so I don't.

The 12HO's definately not for a full range 2-way, but I still it's a great driver for someone who wants to keep the cabinet small and is willing to use a sub.

Too bad about the 15HO and 18HO. When the Magnums came out with shorting rings, I thought Eminence was taking a serious shot at competing against JBL 22xx drivers headon.

I agree, both about the Magnum 12HO and also about Eminence's stab at shorting rings. I hope they continue to research and improve using that technology, but sadly, I think they may have decided to leave it as a paper tiger. They have compained about lagging sales in the drivers with shorting rings, so I think they probably won't do much with them in the future except in name. They can "say" the Definimax drivers have a shorting ring, but I am not convinced it is an optimized shorting ring. I don't think they ever got it down, to be quite honest. Hopefully, they'll continue R&D sometime in the future.
