My neighbor Wayne told me about his website the other night. He asked if i would review some movies and music that may be new to you. So, i've taken the liberty of compiling some bands and some particular albums that i feel would suit your needs as well as provide for an enjoyable listening experience. i've included only a short description of each beacause half the fun is discovering it for yourselves. warning: none of these can be filed under "easy listening". they are...
1.air-'talky walky' album of the year, i'm pretty sure.
2.midwest product- 'world series of love' mostly ambient rock with some keyboards and electronics and a few vocal parts.
3.stereolab- 'margarine eclipse' or 'emporer tomato ketchup' are my personal favorites. a 6piece band that incorporates electronics and features harmonizing female vocals.
4.modest mouse- 'the moon and antartica' art rock.
5.golden- ambient art rock with few vocals.
6.cornelius- 'point' a very diverse and attention grabbing album, mostly electronic. stupendous.
7.neutral milk hotel- 'the aeroplane over the sea' lots of horns and visual lyrics.
8.apex twin- tripped out, intracate sounds.
9.steely dan- 'aja' you know this one.
10.blonde redhead- 'fake can be just as good' arty punk rock. great bass.

Wow, Crystal, Thanks!

I'd really like for you to bring those over sometime soon, maybe one at a time. We'll have more cookouts and we can check them out. The local audio club is definitely gonna like having you in our midst too. I hope you will join us.

The other night, we just played Diana Krall, which is nice and all, pretty and sultry. Good background music, and nice to listen to. But we didn't have time to really check out other stuff. As I told you, I've liked art rock for years, music with a rock edge but definite classical roots. I've stocked my shelves with the full catalog of albums from Yes, Genesis, Gentle Giant and the likes of them.

But I also like a lot of other music too. I have albums from about every classical writer and composer, performed by many 20th century symphonies and musicians. On the other end of the spectrum, I have a lot of pretty heavy stuff like Tool, and I listen to that kind of music a lot too. Depends on the mood, you know. Some of the best good time fun music is from the 50's and 60's, early rock when times were simpler. And I'm taking a liking to the vocalists of the same era, like Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole and so many others like them.

Tonight, I'm listening to Pictures at the Exhibition, and I think I'll write something up. Forest Merrill brought a copy on CD at the last audio club meeting here in Tulsa, and I've been meaning to dust off my copies on vinyl and give them another listen, 'cause I haven't done that in a while. Do you remember Emerson, Lake and Palmer? They did a version and it was great. Hearing a symphony perform it is excellent too, so if you haven't heard a recording of "Pictures" conducted by Arturo Toscanini, you really must do that sometime.

I'm wanting the latest Diana Krall CD, "The Girl In The Other Room" for my birthday. It got good reviews, especially the tracks where Krall co-worked with her (new) hubby, Elvis Costello, whom I'm a big fan of. My cousin bought Kralls DVD, "Live in Paris", I expect to see that with him soon.

I have a pretty broad taste in music, too, Wayne :-)

Hi Crystal,

Thanks for letting me borrow Emperor Tomato Ketchup, 'cause I really like it! It has a sort of dance feel, but a little slower than what I usually identify as techno. I especially like the songs Metronomic Underground and OLV 26.

Emperor Tomato Ketchup

Stereolab reminds me a lot of Kraftwerk with a feminine touch. They have similar styles, but Kraftwerk sounds a little more industrial. In fact, OLV 26 sounds very much like the Kraftwerk song Autobaun, from the album of that name. So since you like Stereolab, you might also like Kraftwerk, especially the albums Autobaun and Radioactive.
