i'm sort of baffled by the ratings for some pi speakers. Ex: the 4 pie bass reflex system w/ JBL parts is rated @ 600w. But wouldn't the 2227h alone require 600w?

The power rating isn't a requirement. It's a maximum safe level. They'll work just fine with one watt, ten watts or one hundred watts.
