I'm going to build the 7Pi's with all JBL drivers. Can the 2241 replace the 2242? If yes, will I be losing anything over the 2242. Can the 2258HPL replace the 2242? And what are some of my choices, in conjunction with the aforementioned drivers, for subbing of the 2446 driver? I'm using a Foreplay Preamp with Paramour mono's @ 3.5 watts. The 7Pi's will be replacing Klipsch LaScala's. I've read through various posts where people are substituting drivers and my intentions are not to experiment or tweak but to save money wherever I can. Cannot find the 2242 used(new B-stock is $689 each) and the 2446 are $500 each, new. The used market for both these drivers is very limited. So any advice would be much appreciated.

Regards,
Gerry Provenzale

Yes, you can substitute the JBL 2241 for the 2242.

18" woofer yet? It is supposed to be a very nice copy of the 2241h and is of course less money. They also build a JBL 15 2226 knock off and some really good sounding compression drivers. I compared the thier big 2" exit driver to my TAD 4001's and was mighty impressed by the sonics.

Hi Kelly,

Yes, the can be found at http://www.paudioamerica.com/

These new Super Neo compression drivers look great, I haven't tried them yet.

If you search around you can find some pricing. The drivers I heard are around $350 a pair. Martin Sound sells them in Cleveland.

How about Brand X? [message #34347 is a reply to message #34345] Thu, 06 December 2001 19:55 Go to previous messageGo to next message

Another interesting knock off is "Brand X." The proprietor is W. Mark Hellinger, and he wrote to me a month or two ago after some people were discussing Brand X components on this forum. He said he used JBL components in the past but needed a low cost replacement so had copies made in China. The magnets are ferrite without shorting rings, and the electro-mechanical specs are similar to JBL drivers. He claims they're good for about 1/2 the power of the comparible JBL part and correspondingly reduced max SPL.

Never heard of that one. The P. Audio is asian that's for sure. They even go as far as putting 2441 and 2226 in the model number of their copies. Pretty bold IMO. The specs look very familiar too. I was just curious to see if you tried them yet, and to get your opinion if you did.

Brand X can be found at www.brandxline.com and the address for "P Audio" is www.paudioamerica.com. Both make JBL replacement products, and both use JBL's numbering scheme, i.e. 2206, 2226, 2242, etc.
