The variable resistor has three pens, but the schematic shows only two hook up points. What I did is hook the two pens up that show variable resistance when the screw is turned. The third pen is not used. Is this correct.....Colin

hey-hey!!!,
You can wire it two ways:

one. wire to one end and the wiper.

two. wire to a connected wiper/end terminal and the other end terminal.

Pick the end terminal so that the twisting direction fits your own convention for increasing regulated current. It isn't all that important, save for making sure both are done the same way.

Option 2 also leaves a guaranteed resistance should the wiper contact fail. I don't see this as all that big a threat, and don't see catastrophic damage happening if it does fail.

I suggest option 2.
