If you aren't running a Mac then are you capable of using any other screen that you choose for your computer?

I haven't used it yet, but my laptop has a connection for an external screen. I think you have to do a couple keystrokes to activate it.

And it looks like the TV has a similar input, that corresponds to the input selection page onscreen.

I assume it's for people who want to use the laptop, but don't mind springing for a larger monitor when they're in one place for a while.

ARe you asking if you can use any type of screen for your computer? If so, you can use any type of screen or monitor for your computer.
