Not that it's bad, but big brother is really pushing the DTV transition. It even has it's own website:

That kind of concerns me too. I like the technology, but I sort of lump this in with the BPL issue. Having digital communications pumped through the power lines is a cool idea, but it may kill radio reception, particularly in the shortwave and medium wave (AM) bands. Of course, that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with DTV, but this is another example of a technology leap that requires a paradigm shift.

Naturally, I am glad to see the move towards higher quality but wonder about the hundreds of millions of existing televisions that will be made obsolete. Many families plan to keep televisions sets for a decade or longer, so the next three years will go pretty quickly. Perhaps the cable television and satelite companies will retain analog channels for customers that request it. We'll see.

M. Powell has not been any good at keeping access to the
airwaves free. Why would the powerlines be any different?

I'd have to say up front that, like Kevin Philips on the
issue of Powell's Boss being a conservative; "If he's
one, I'm not one." It's sort of come down to that.
Whatever M. Powell is in favor of, "I'm not one."
