Our female singer has a very powerful voice, and tends to overdrive her current microphone (a mid-level Electro-Voice).

Any recommendations for a more suitable microphone? Nothing ultra-expensive please.

Try the EV RE20. We've had good luck recording with it even with people that eat the mic.

You need a vocal mic like the Shure SM-58.
Or any of it's competitors.
