Hey guys,

I just turned 16 and am getting my sister's 1984 volvo 240. Right now it has a cd player and 4 speakers... but it sucks...

I think the best way to go would be to put in all new stuff. What would be the best way to go to get a full sound system and how much do I need to spend to make it decent?

Thanks for the advice,

Casey

Best bet is to go listen to stereos and find one you like. When listening to speakers, make sure you know how much box volume (space) is behind the speakers you're listening to. If it isn't close to the same volume that will be behind the speakers in your car, they will sound different, particularly in the bass. Most car speakers are made to be used with a fairly large rear volume, like would be expected in the trunk of a car. If you put them in a door, the space is significantly smaller and bass and midrange tends to suffer. So keep that in mind, and try to find speakers that work best in the space they'll be used in.

The 240 doors allow for very little depth in the door speakers. There are exceptionally few choices that fit. To get a full sound, I'd be thinking about a system that can easily accommodate a sub either now or in the future so you don't have to back up and start over.

I put an Alpine deck with satellite radio and an ipod input module in my 240 wagon and I find it really funny to think about the technologically advanced sound system juxtaposed with the 4 banger cast iron engine and tractor transmission. Still, it it runs well and hauls a ton of stuff.

That is kind of funny. There is probably several hundred man years or more of technological development in your sound system, and maybe a couple dozen in the rest of the car.

But then again, I know you love tubes, so there's something about old school stuff too...

Yep, and I still have to get my butler 275 tube car amp installed. Can't decide whether to have it drive one of the pair of speakers, or a sub in the back!

I also like cameras made of metal which expose film, more often black & white! (Although I do also use a digicam and love my pinhole camera. Now THERE's several hundred years of progress on parade!)

Sweet!

Let me know how you like that Butler amp when you get it running.

Best sound upgrade on my Volvo 240 was the 5.0L Ford powerplant and transmission.
