Back in the eighties I was in a band that had a frequency analyzer that was used to set the equalizers. It would generate noise through the P.A. system and we'd set the bands of EQ based on the LEDs on the analyzer. I recall it working quite well.

It was adjusted in real time which wasn't welcomed depending on who else was in the club at the time.

Do you know if that basic system is still used?

You can use white or pink noise and measure the room, sure. One of the more popular measurement systems for live setup is Smaart. Check it out.
