Since array designs tend to smooth Frequency response, and reduce distortion, it would appear that these are not the most significant characteristics when looking for DIY speakers to put into them.

What are the most important ones?

Perhaps sensitivity? High x-max? High Q's for a sealed box? transient response?

What do you think?

If you had to choose? low distortion. This is why many Dayton RS models beat the competition because of low distortion levels.

Frequency response smoothes with multiple speakers and is affected by the room anyway, and often needs equalization. But you can't make high distortion go away.
