Is 16 Ohm a better match for amplifiers? My JBL2440 are 16 Ohm I,m getting new tweeters that will be 16 Ohm I could use two midbass in series to get 16 Ohm.

Does your amplifier have a 16 ohm tap?

Hi Wayne I don't have 16 ohm taps 4 and 8 Cary Audio Rocket88.I'm now running a fostex T90a tweeter and a Jbl 2440 with original diaphrams on a edgar tractix midrange horn.I'm switching to a new tweeter Ev T350 with new 16 ohm diaphrams so thats what the amp will be running with a new midbass.should I use 16 ohm driver or I have a pair of E130-8 Which I'm in the middle of build the horns but was thinking of looking for 16 ohm woofer for this job.See below the 2440 I'm using an 18" pro driver 97db 1w1m Bi-amped and the midbass is lets just say not to par with the rest of my system. Regards Tim

If you don't have 16 ohm taps, then you might want to use 8 ohm speakers. It isn't a real bad mismatch, but it probably will rob some of your power transfer and might hurt bass response too.

Hi Wayne I'm aware of the power limitations and i'm sure the tweeter and midrange horns impedence are probably on the low side of 16 ohms(more like 10 to 12 in there operating band). Not only that I think they would run ok from 500hz on up with 10 watts. It the midbass at resonance that may be a problem but they only go down to 100hz.The low end will be my 2 18's stacked (parallel 103db1w1m).So i don't think Iwill have a bass problem.but from the amp stand point don't they operate more stabble at around 16 ohm? Regards Tim

It will probably work just fine. It probably won't be quite as loud at full volume as if load impedance were lower, but it will work.

Maybe I will change my order to 8 ohm diaphrams [message #17476 is a reply to message #17473] Mon, 24 January 2005 14:41 Go to previous messageGo to next message

Hi Wayne And keep 2440's with the resistor you seem to be indicating that is the case.By the way the speakers I won I'm using the tweeter with 4-radioshack 40-1197's on on open baffle they sound good. The woofer I'm building a bass horn for thanks Wayne you been a great help. Regards Tim

If your amp is designed for an 8 ohm load, you might be better off using 8 ohm speakers. It isn't usually a problem if impedance rises, but power transfer might be reduced a little bit. Impedance at low frequencies is sometimes more of a problem.

Glad you're enjoying the speakers you won in the 25,000th post game. Colin Hester made the donation of the albums; I just agreed to substitute them for speakers if the winner had the albums or didn't have a turntable or whatever. So thanks go to Colin in this case.

By the way, what resistor are you refering to? Do you use a damping resistor or some sort of level matching?
