I'd appreciate hearing from any Ampex users familiar with the problems encountered getting these first generation transistor decks running and integrated into a conventional tube-based hifi system.

This maybe isn't exactly what you're looking for, but maybe others will chime in when they notice your post. However, I've found a couple of service shops and organizations that are pretty good with tape drives. Larry, at Approved Audio Service always comes to mind, because he's a nice guy and very knowledgable. You might also check with www.StereoManuals.com for a set of owner, repair and technical manuals.
