I recently purcheced a Sony PS T15 turntabe off ebay and when i hooked it up it has a very loud hum. It sounds like a dead short, not a 60 cycle buzz. There is no ground wire so i tried connecting one from the chassis to my stereo but it didn't help. Any thoughts?

Are both channels of the cartridge connected? In other words, can you hear sound from both channels through the hum? If not, that may be the culprit. An open line can be pretty noisy, with long wires having no termination.

Thanks for the reply. Hum is from both channels however, the hum stops when i remove the holder/cartrige from the end of the arm. So i swapped out the cartrige with an older one and the hum is back, so i ruled out a bad cart unless both are bad. I am going to try to replace both RCA cables to see if thats it. There is no grnd wire, is this normal? Thanks again.

If you don't have a ground wire, that's probably it. Connect the chassis and arm to the ground lug on your preamp.
