Sight
Smell
Hearing
Taste
Touch

These are the 5 senses with the ones in bold being the ones we can record.

Has anyone ever wondered why, with all the technical advances we have, we have never figured out how to record the others?

Well, if you think about it, you can. It's just that sight and sound are waveforms - one acoustic and the other electromagnetic - and the other three are physical or chemical. So to "record" a touch sensation, you would need a physical apparatus to sense the pressure an/or movement and to record smell or taste, you would need something that could do chemical sampling. Playback would require reproducing the samples by generating pressure and movement for touch and chemicals for smell and taste.

In a way, we "record" tastes by keeping recipes and smells by buying perfumes, incense and other fragrances. And we sort of record touch sensations in various forms with things like back scratchers and massage tables and even things like roller coasters and other amusement park rides.

Sounds like cloning. In a way. Maybe we do record the other three, but call it by a different name. I get what you're saying, but it does have the attributes of something that is only akin to what we consider recording.

Per the definition of the verb, you could record something like touch by simply writing down what it feels like. Other people would then know without having having to feel the sensation themselves.

Very interesting! Yes, I too believe we can record touch. Either by feeling it or by documenting what it feels like.

How could we record smell? Documentation as well? People smell things differently.

Don't forget about #6. The military hasn't.

But to topic....when a person burns a finger on the stove when they're 3, that feeling is burned into their memory cells. That's why don't do that again. They remember how it feels. It's recorded.

The laws of physics dictate that we can only record 2 in the conventional sense, and not the other three. Change the laws of physics and you will change the outcome of recording the senses.

Like taking pain and turning that feeling into sound to make it recordable? Give it time friend, and someone like Elon Musk will invent it.

I take that the definition of the recording here is through the use of technology because familiarisation with something also counts as recording, with the mind at least. Imagine recording taste though and being able to send that via messenger. It would be between delicious and disgusting! Laughing

I think that taste is recorded, in a way. If you eat a chocolate bar, you'll get a similar flavor each time. You don't eat a chocolate bar expecting it to taste like an egg. It's not perfect, obviously, but I think that it's the closest we'll ever get to recording taste.
