I've been looking around online at home theatre receivers because I'm thinking of upgrading mine. I see lots of talk about 4K and 4K "Ultra". Are these just buzzwords or is it actually worth the money to purchase a 4K unit?

The concept of 4K technology is something you will hear all around you but it comes down to how much you want to spend on a home theater. As far as I know, the best pictures are those from 4K Blue-ray discs using a 4K Blue-ray player. There is more picture clarity, so to speak.

I don't think there are many 1080p screens being made now days....
Most new models(if not all) are 4K.

If you sit closer than 10' and use an 80" or larger screen, it may be worth it.

I find the new OLED's to be more of a stark improvement (due to an increase in dynamic range (deepest blacks/brightest whites)) than switching from 1080 to 4K.

YMMV.

Well...4K is better, but there is still little media for it. I would wait. BTW 8K is on the horizon at present. Where will it stop?

Good Listening

Unless the content is being delivered in HDR, you're not going to notice much of a difference. As the poster above me stated, I would wait for the content to catch up to the capibilities. Until then, stick with 1080p.
