clear of even semi-transparent vinyl of any color. when i start it the arm will go over near the edge of the record and then it will stop and go back to it's rest. it's a sony ps-636.
any clues on how i can override this safeguard? i can't find a sensor anywhere.

That's an interesting symptom. You might get the service manual and see if there is any info there. If nothing else, at least you'll have the manual.
