I'm shopping around for a DAW app that I can use on a PC. If there's one that works on both PCs and Macs, even better, but not necessary. I'm new to this and I'm finding it a bit overwhelming. From what I've read, Propellerhead's Reason and Ableton Live seem to be solid options. Has anyone ever used either of these? Is ~$300 a pretty standard price for DAW software?

Ableton Live is usually much more expensive than $300 so if you find a recent version at that price and you like working with the software you should snatch it up.
I've used Ableton Live and Cockos Reaper. Both should work on a Mac and PC. Ableton offers all the bells and whistles, but it comes with a higher price tag and is more complicated. Reaper is more affordable and has the features I need like recording and mixing. I hope this helps somewhat.
