I just purchased an Onkyo TX-8011 reciever to replace my 35 yr old worn out Pioneer. I have a 35 year old Pioneer PL-55DX turntable. I connected the turntable to the phono input on back of the reciever but the volume is barely audible. Onkyo recommends an MC head amp or a Phono equalizer. I am not familiar with either. I also see online that people recommend a phono preamp. I'm confused, what do I need to make this turntable have adequate volume? I just want something inexpensive, I only use the turntable o couple times a year. Many thanks for any help or advice.

Turntable Basics has a cheap phono pre-amp stage. It's about 30$.
