Compression has been around for a long time. However the digital compressions (like MP3) loose a significant portion of the original data and it can not be expanded back to original content. Does anyone know of a way to get better sound on an MP3 or other digital formats?

I have noticed the discrepancy of some digital formats. They just don't sound very good. I am interested in what could be done to help this sound as well. I currently don't use MP3s or the like because of the sound.

I find mp3's almost unlistenable at anything above whisper levels.

I usually use/download AIFF.
It's s a high definition audio format, but I believe FLAC is the most common format.
