Is it true that sound energy within a studio either gets absorbed, reflected or diffused? Again, how can low frequency be managed? A studio producer once told me that the smaller the room, the better.

Small rooms have greater problems with room modes.

Search for "reverberent field" to learn more about room treatments and loudspeaker configurations that work well from 200Hz up.
