I used to think the ground wire didn't matter much but have since learned that it does carry a bit of the return signal. I have also noticed subtle differences in quality depending on the wire make.
This is interesting. And, yes, the explanation certainly makes sense given the different kinds of wire material available on the market. Goes to show that curiosity is a good thing as there is always room to learn!
