I want to upgrade the way I listen to music on my laptop, but I don't want to make any sacrifices in performance anywhere else. Like the online courses that I take. Any suggestions?

What kind of sound card do you have on your computer? You can try upgrading the sound card and getting a pair of outboard speakers instead of relying on the computer speakers.
Buy a nice set of computer speakers and it will make a big difference in how your music sounds coming through your computer. I would suggest something by Logitech; they make awesome speakers.

Hi, You can also get USB connected external "sound cards" I use one from SIIG that will do recording from analog sources, digital sources and feed either headphones or 7.1 (and 2,2.1,3 etc) analog and digital outputs. Small size (about 3X3X1 inches) and USB powered. They are currently about $75 new. Simple to use, no drivers or software needed for most of the features.
