I just read an interesting article titled "The Educated Ear" about jazz recording engineer Jim Anderson and his thoughts on recording. You should check it out.
Learning to listen is very important here. That may be the biggest difference between an audiophile and a casual listener. An audiophile listens for the small things.

Hopefully he's trained many fine recording engineers. Nothing for me with music is more aggravating than the god awful loudness war perpetrated on the young public. Despicable, vile disregard for fidelity. Kids need access to well crafted recordings even if the musical style would wilt my ears like a spider on a hotplate.
For jazz I've had an appreciation of the great Rudy Van Gelder. Some of my favorites are his craftwork.
It gives the impression that the educated ear won't be one who will like what the majority does without careful consideration. Listening to those subtleties helps generate more authentic sounds.
