What's the status on shortwave radio's these days? As a Christmas gift to myself I'd like to get one, I've always wanted one, but I don't know that much about them. Are they expensive? What kind of range can I expect out of an average shortwave radio?

I love shortwave radios, although since internet streaming audio has become popular, the novelty of shortwave is probably lessened.

You can get shortwave pocket and table radios, as well as more sophisticated radios designed to use external antennas. Prices range from under a hundred dollars to several hundred dollars.

Shortwave stations can be heard around the world, at various times of the day. Some frequencies work best at day, others work best at night and still others work best at sunrise and sunset.
