Our living room area rug is old, stained and mildewed. I want to throw it out but it may be awhile before we can replace it. It's low pile but big (10x15) and I'm wondering how badly acoustics will be affected in the room if I take it out. The floor underneath is tile.

Take it out and see what you think.

The worst floor bounce anomaly is in the lower midrange, where no rug can help. The only thing that helps deal with the floor bounce notch in that range is flanking subs. However, there is usually some ripple in the upper midrange too, and the throw rug will help that. Also, if your speakers don't limit vertical dispersion at HF, I find a reflective floor to be particularly annoying. It isn't as bad as ceiling slap, but the HF reflections off the floor can give a shrill sort of phantom image. It's like cymbals coming from underground.
