I don't know much about DJing, but I assume that when DJs scratch a lot, they also need to replace their vinyl frequently. Is that true, or are there scratching techniques that still preserve the vinyl?

Scratching LPs, even if you are professional DJ and use high quality styli, will damage a record. They do need replacing eventually. Most Disc Jockeys will have multiple copies of each LP they use and will make sure the condition of their equipment is as good as possible to minimize damage.

That makes sense. At least they do what they can to prolong the life of the vinyl before replacing it. The vinyl lover in me cringes just a little though. Razz
