Someone told me that radio producers were responsible for creating the music term 'country and western', and that prior to that these were very distinct styles. Has anyone else heard this?

Yes. To the best of my knowledge they were two different genres a long time ago that got lumped together at one point.

Thanks Adveser. I will have to dig around a bit more on this topic. What I find interesting is that I couldn't name any song I would consider 'western', yet country is so easy to identify.
