Actually, the idea is that the physical wood-to-floor vibrations don't touch the floor. The insulation will kill the sound pretty well. You have to get those old milkcrates that are made of that thick, hard, old-fashioned plastic, which oddly enough, is made of milk.

I used to put towels over the milkcrates, so they look like little tables. These days, I put my 3' speakers right on the floor so the tweeter is at ear level sitting on the floor. I used to aim the mid-ranges at my ears, which was back when I didn't know about speaker placement and how the highs travel faster and in a more directional way.
