I am finally getting new stuff for the living room, and I would be very happy if I can get rid of all the cables. However, I don't know how to do it myself, and was wondering how much would be a fair price to pay for someone to run cables through the walls?

Honestly I would just ask an experienced friend over and have him/her show you how to do it. Then you can pay them or just buy them lunch or something.

Why not gather and group them or hide them under a rug instead? Drilling holes through the walls sounds kind of extreme to achieve "wirelessness".

Yes, but it looks really nice. I actually have both in my house. The rear surrounds have wires run through the walls and it looks great. The middle surrounds have wires under the rug and it looks so-so.
