can a guitar amp be used with an av receiver (hifi system)? [message #7862]

My question is if you have to buy a guitar amp AND a stack of speakers, or if you can only buy the amp (maybe the behringer preamp V-AMPII), and hook it up to your hifi system and listen to it from there. thank you

The speaker, cabinet, and cab resonances are an important part of the sound of a guitar amp/spkr. You can play your guitar through home stereo speakers, but the tone will be very dry and lackluster.

My hubby plays his guitar through our stereo. It doesnt sound too bad though. He does that when he want to record some of his ideas to tape.

If his guitar amp has a "Line Out" or "Preamp Out", he can route that signal through a Y-cable with RCA phono plugs, and go into an auxillary, tape in, or other line level input on the stereo system. The Y-cable will allow the signal to go to both Left and Right channels.

He may want to use a mixer of some sort, to first mix his guitar signal with a prerecorded backup, such as the Jamie Aebersold CD's sold by www.jazzbooks.com. Then from the mixer into a line level input on the stereo.
