I have an old desk top record player that I've had since childhood. I've been thinking of hacking it and hooking up new speakers to it to amplify the sound. Do you think this would work or should I just buy a new turntable?

What model turntable is it? Are you hoping for high fidelity or are you just playing around?

I'd leave the original alone and buy a new turntable. You never know when something like this will become a collectors item and be worth a bit.
