Recently, Bill Epstein suggested that I use nitrocellulose on some speakers I'm having built. I was wondering, is that the finish commonly used on guitars? It's a form of lacquer, right?

The finish I'm looking for is a shiny smooth surface that almost looks like the pearl coat on a car. I really like how it looks on pianos and guitars.

You may be referring to French Polish. There's a website with thorough instructions on polishing a guitar if you Google french Polish. Guy has a Latin sounding name IIRC and uses olive oil as a lubricant. I'd find it for you but a certain virus wiped out my ability to search for anything and the registry doctor has been busy.
