I suggest anyone still beating that dead horse about guns protecting you look at the stats for todays release of the figures for 2005. Violent crime fell in LA/NY/MASS/Detroit and other places where there are strict gun laws on the books.
It rose in Arizona/Texas/North Florida/Kansas and a few others where everyone is packing. 4.8% is a pretty big jump overall; fell a lot in NY. Very strict laws here.

The relevant statistic here is:

#violent crimes thwarted by armed potential victims
/
total # violent crimes (attempted & completed)

You won't see that measure now will you. Becuase most thwarted crimes are not reported.

The FBI can't report that because it is unreliable and non-specific. The Thwarted crimes are purely anecdotal and subject to dispute since there are so very few.
