What brands out there do you think have too much hype and not enough quality? What about the other way around? I feel like I always hear the same brand names over and over again. I wonder if that's just because they happen to have a lot of media presence or because they actually deserve all the fanfare.

A great salesman can sell a mediocre product much, much better than a mediocre salesman can sell a great product. I think that this is what is happening with some of these big companies.

They are really good at marketing their products and we rush to buy them without realizing that they're not really as good as advertised.

I have to agree with you about the salesman. There are some brands that have a good reputation and they still don't fit my bill. You just have to listen to them at the store to make sure it is the one for you. Brands don't really matter if you ask me.

That's a great point about the salesman, and all the other points you make, like brands not really mattering at the end of the day so long as the product suits your needs. I guess I was really asking if there are brand names out there you don't' consider worth the investment.
