Who technically sold the most CD's in 2016? That's right, Mozart.

This news is making the internet rounds right now and I think it's great.

Long live Mozart!!!

Is that really true? I mean I find it really hard to believe that he outsold Drake. Not that I have anything against Motzart, but hey...

I can believe that, as long as it is only CDs. Most of the modern artists are going to sell a large proportion of new releases on MP3 and other streaming formats, which reduces CD sales.

After all, since this is a Mozart collector's edition with each purchase counting as 200 CD sales, it is not hard to believe it topped the charts!

Does anyone know how much each box set went for? That had to be quite a price tag.

I wonder if any of the buyers are going to re-sell their purchase at a later date.

I was curious so I looked it up. Mozart 225 goes for $340.67 on Amazon, which is expensive, but not as expensive as I thought it would be. That's under $1.50 a CD!

That's a huge amount of CDs that comes with this collection. It's no wonder he sold the most. I wonder if they ever plan on doing this with any other classical artist? I wouldn't mind having a box set of Bach or Beethoven.

I know I'm probably going to come across as uncultured, but I have to ask. Why would someone want to own 200 of Mozart's CDs at the same time? I've heard a couple of his compositions and they sound the same to me...

I also don't know if I would purchase such a huge number of CDs at once. Thing is, any Mozart fan would do this. With all the options available today, I don't see how a modern artist would wholly rely on CD sales.

I wish someone would issue something like this collection for Chopin.

If you've only heard one or two of his massive output (List here) you may have heard some from the same period or even the same opera, which will sound alike. However his Masses, piano music and orchestral work for example were very different, and like any artist his style changed over time.

I think this is typically what it means to have a music legacy. Mozart is no more but his music continues to be felt across generations. To sell 1.25 million copies is no mean fete.
