I am certain that this bass guitar is of good quality but it just does not sound right, more like bees in a tin box. Could it be something to do with my amp settings?

What is the body made of? And the strings? What brand is the bass and the amp?

My first guess would be the strings. As with any issue regarding the performance of something, start with the cheapest and easiest possible solution first. You will find your fix quicker that way.

Reading this, I am just recalling the difficulty I have in tuning my guitar and at times I think it messes me up when playing on stage. I am good with the acoustic guitar but the bass is definitely in my bucket list.
