After the recent talk on here of junkie digital players with cheap circuitry that don't really give decent sound reproduction, it made me wonder. Are there any that do a good job? Or do the majority of smartphones and digital players fall into this category?

Hi there are several high quality digital players....it is mostly a matter of how large is your budget. From reviews and write ups in various publications it seems that really decent portable players start at about $200. The go up rapidly from there. How good is needed is the ever asked question. It seems that ones that can handle 24bit/96K sampling is at the bottom of the really good ones. There is controversy over which DACs are best as well. Few phones, tablets and other portable devices reach these standards. Another consideration is how good do you really need it to be. If all you are going to listen to are compressed MP3s then nearly anything will work. It might be better to spend more on good headphones.

Would there be much point in buying really good headphones to go with a not to good MP3 player? Or is the middle ground a better range-having both middling headphones and player?
