How about this for a simple, beginner musical project build a Korg Synthsizer! I remember way back as a middle school student seeing a synthesizer demo, and since then I've always been fascinated with electronically produced music. A company called LittleBits has partnered with Korg to produce a foolproof kit for making a small synthesizer! I heard about it first here: http://motherboard.vice.com/blog/the-synth-anyone-can-build. Check it out.

It may be a bit too simple for the crowd here. It looks like a very beginner level kit. But I see that it could be a great way to introduce a child to both music and electronics in a safe, fun, and unique way.
