I have a couple of electric guitars, one of which needs a lot of work. I can play it a guitar all day long but I don't even know where to start with fixing one. Where could I take it? How would I know that they know what they're doing?

Are there any local music stores? Start there since they may have a repair person employed or can give you some leads. Then you can talk to whomever you find and ask for references if it reassures you.
