We've all seen them. Re-mastered copies of original music that was originally released 30 or 40 years ago. Does anyone really notice an upgrade in the sound though? Do you think if you have a better sound system it will help you get a better sound out of the re-mastered copies?

Hi, Great question which has been discussed in several of the hi-fi mags and forums. When dealing with vinyl, some new ones are better. The consensus is that most are not. The LPs before about 1975 were often carefully done with quality material and machinery. Then came the mass marketing period when they were done with less care. Now new LPs of new music can be quite good as there is an effort in the industry toward quality. Remastered ones would seem to have some advantages but it depends highly on who is doing the remastering. I have several copies of originals and remastered copies and with one exception the originals have a better sound. Now if you mean remastering and putting on a CD then the issue gets real fuzzy. It again depends on who did the remastering and how much care was used at every step of the process. I have a number of CD versions of the original vinyl LPs. Generally they are quieter and have a different tonal quality. Often brighter IMHO than the original. Some early CD versions of LPs that I have were horrible (early 80s seemed the worst). So.... the answer is both yes and no.
